Fabric face masks

All of us are terrified of the COVID-19 pandemic, and rightfully so. Many are so graciously offering free fabric face mask patterns. Know that while these are not a substitute for nor as effective as PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), they are "better than nothing" to help stop the spread of the virus. These masks are sewn from several free online patterns.

Narrow elastic is difficult to find these days, isn't it? So it is used for only two of these masks. On some of the others, there are four 18" fabric ties sewn to the sides (instead of the two elastic ear loops). The elastic or ties keep the mask held snugly to the face. These masks required only one fat quarter each. 'Safely gifted three of these face masks to my neighbors across the hall. Of course, our best defense is staying home and washing our hands as much as possible. A rectangle piece of a vacuum filter (containing no fiberglass!) or coffee filter can be used as an insert, as an added layer of security. Remember that fabric masks should be washed and dried after every use, and the paper filter replaced after every use.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has a lot of useful information about COVID-19. They also offer several: cloth face mask patterns that cost little to make. One is a video. The CDC states that PPE masks (now in short supply) need to be reserved for those in healthcare professions and for other medical first responders. Have you sewn any face masks?

I've made quite a few too and given them to friends. It's a good idea to have extras on hand too. I had some elastic and was glad of that. Take care and stay healthy! Hugs!

Great masks. Yes elastic is hard to find right now. Janice
